Columbia students and together to help fellow student and rape survivor

A week or so ago, a student at Columbia University made a vow to carry a mattress with her across campus until the man who raped her was brought to justice and expelled. As part of her “Carry That Weight” project, Emma Sulkowicz wasn’t allowed to ask other students to help her carry the mattress, but ever since she started, dozens of students have stepped in to assist her and symbolically “share her weight”.

Student Allie Rickard helped organize a separate movement called “Carrying yhe Weight Together”. Rickard told the Columbia Spectator: “When I heard about Emma’s thesis project, I had a really strong reaction and felt I understood what Emma was doing as an artist and wanted to be in solidarity with her and other [rape] survivors.

“I think there’s been a general feeling from people among both schools [Columbia University and Barnard College] that there’s a great sense of support for Emma and other survivors and this would be great for people to get involved on a daily basis, and just show solidarity, and give Emma and other survivors support.”
